Cityville Guide

I never intended to play Cityville, let alone write a guide for the game, but a good friend of mine persuaded me to play it and now I can see that there is a need for a guide. I still do not intend to write a proper guide, but will log some of the quests and various strategies as I continue to play.

Cityville in terms of gameplay and options is more similar to Frontierville than FarmVille. Quests appear in the left margin of the screen and completion of Quests is one of the keys to unlocking new options. Constant interaction with Neighbours, both through Requests and by visiting other Towns is another key strategy.

You begin the game with 5 Cash and 7000 Coins and 12 Energy. You will be introduced to your land and to the game by your in-game Neighbour, Samantha or Sam. She will act as your first Neighbour as well as giving you Goals that represent little tutorials on gameplay issues.

Cityville is very much a goal-driven game, unlike Farmville, where players can accept the Quests that appear occasionally on the left side of the screen but are not forced to do so in order to be able to advance. More recently, games like FarmVille and Fantasy Kingdoms, once entirely open-ended, allowing players to move along at their own pace, have introduced Quests to try to compete with goal-driven Games. Perhaps this is a mistake. Many players resent it when a game like Cityville or Frontiersville attempts to force them to move in a carefully choreographed programme from A to B to C. If, however, one enters the game initially knowing that this will be the case, the resentment is lessened considerably. If you expect Cityville to be like Farmville, in other words, you may be disappointed. Cityville is a game with a plan and the primary plan for any Player is to be elected as Mayor.

Even at the very start, the Mayoral ambition will be introduced. If a player wishes to ignore this goal, he/she is free to do so. You always can build whatever you please and landscape your City as a fantasy place that pleases your aesthetics without any regard for the in-built goals. It is not a game that can be 'lost' or 'won'. You won't find yourself ejected from the land if you fail to make any attempt to become Mayor. On the other hand, although most of the buildings are unlocked by achieving specific levels, some are available only to Players who have completed specific Goals.

Obtaining Materials and Items in CityVille

There are a number of different types of items that can be required for the completion of Quests in CityVille. These include the following:

Specific numbers of Crops that must be harvested and/or the Mastery of Specific Crops;
A specific Residence or Business that must be in place either in your City or in a Neighbour's City;
Collection Items;
Specific Decorations placed in your City;
Specific Number of Building Materials required to complete a Building or Construction Project that is the subject of a Quest.

Crops generally are unlocked by achieving a specific Level of Experience. Planting a Crop usually will not satisfy any requirements but harvesting Crops are requirements in many Quests. Mastery of a specific Crop can be a requirement in a Quest as well and this is achieved by harvesting a specific number of Crops.

Residences can be obtained in a number of ways. There are Residences that will appear in your Inventory as a reward for completion of a Quest or as a Prize for staying at a Hotel or earning the daily Energy Bonus. Other Residences are unlocked by achieving a specific level of Experience or by completing a Quest. Finally, there are Residences that can be purchased, either with Coins or with CV Cash. Some of these always are available in the Marketplace. Others are limited Editions that are time-restricted. Premium Residences usually allow far greater population increases than Residences that can be purchased with coins. Note that Residences, like Businesses, seldom will be complete when purchased. You need to use a specific amount of your Energy to complete them.

Businesses are similar to Residences in the manners in which they can be obtained. Like Residences, some are rewards for completing a Quest or prizes for having VIP status at a Neighbour's Hotel. Others are purchased in the Marketplace and, like Residences, some are premium purchases and some are time-restricted.

Note that there are items in 'Collections' that can be obtained solely by harvesting from a specific Residence or Business. The completion of Collections can result in the acquisition of a specific decoration, but usually is a reward in the form of Energy or XP. The CD Players required in the first Dance Request is an example of a Collection Item that can be obtained solely by harvesting from two specific Residences.

Decorations take many different forms from pavements to ornamental items and can be obtained in a number of ways. They can Rewards for completion of a Quest or Prizes for obtaining VIP status in a Hotel. They can be obtained from a Mystery Gift sent by a Neighbour. Finally, they can be purchased in the Marketplace in the Build Menu under Decorations and like, other items, can be available all the time or be time-limited special items. Placing a specific Decoration in your City can be a Quest requirement.

Of all the items in CityVille, it is the building materials that can be the most vexing as they often need to be obtained in large quantities in order to complete a Construction Project or Upgrade. It is the methods by which building materials are obtained that confuse some players.

First, it should be stated that most building materials CAN be purchased but the price given is for one item and not for the total number needed. The price always is in premium cash and this avenue can be prohibitively expensive. It is far better to obtain the items from Neighbours.

The methods by which Building Materials can be obtained from Neigbhours are:

First, by generating a request through the building construction project menu by clicking on 'Ask Friends'.

There are two separate methods by which a player can 'Ask Friends' for an item and the GAME determines which of these is to be utilised in any specific case. When one clicks on the option, one either will be given the option to Post to the Player's own Wall or to choose to send individual Requests to Neighbours displayed on a list.

When a Request is posted to a Player's Wall, the game determines how many Neighbours/Friends can click on the request to fill it. Usually, there is a limit to the number of players that can help and this number seldom equals the total number of items needed. For example, a Player may need 14 of a given Material for a building project. When the Request is posted to the Wall, it is possible that only 2 Players can click on it. What this means is that Players often must post the same Wall Request again and again.

An individual Request allows the Player who receives it to send one item to the Player who requested it. If a Player has many Neighbours, He/she often can complete a Material requirement faster for the items that can be requested individually.

There is a big difference between a Request posted on a Player's Wall and one sent individually in terms of its effect on the player who fills the request. Wall Requests usually come with a reward either in the form of the same item that was requested or in coins. The Item Reward is far better than the coin Reward, although once again, it is the game that determines which one will be applied to any building Material request.

Note that a Player who visits his/her Neighbours' Walls therefore can obtain many of the building Materials that will be needed to complete Quests simply by helping Neighbours. This is where the Wall Request is better than the individual request. On the other hand, it involves more labour on the part of the Player who wishes to help.

Other methods of obtaining Building Materials are the Wish List and the Mystery Gift.

Mystery Gifts can be sent to Neighbours and can contain a wide variety of items, including Building Materials, Coins, XP points and Crew Members for Community Buildings. They are found in the Free Gifts Menu and can be sent a couple of times each day to all Neighbours or Facebook Friends. If a Player is patient, he/she often can obtain most of the Building Materials needed for a project simply by accepting Mystery Gifts.

The other method by which Building Materials can be obtained is the Wish List. The Wish List is displayed above a Player's Inventory. He/she can place up to five different items in the Wish List, either by dragging an item from Inventory or by going to a Quest and clicking on the plus sign (+) next to any given Building Material.

Neighbours can find a Player's Wish List by accessing the Neighbour Tab when logged into CityVille. A Neighbour can send all five Items on a Wish List in a matter of seconds provided he/she possesses them. Note that any Item sent will be the Item from inventory and it therefore does not make sense to send Items that a Player will need for his/her own Quests! It is only extra items from completed Quests that should be sent to Neighbours via the Wish List option.

Initial Quest Sequences

Your first instruction or Quest, called Goals in Cityville, is to build a Cozy Cottage from the BUILD Menu. It costs 200 Coins with a population of 10 - 20 and Rent that is gained at the rate of 50 coins per hour.

Sam: Hi, I'm Samantha! This land's got potential! Become Mayor, and build the city of your dreams!
Okay
Sam: Grow your Population! Click BUILD to make a new house.

The game then forces you to place the House in a specific location. It is the Cozy Cottage which is the smallest and cheapest housing project in Cityville. It costs 200 Coins, requires 2 Energy to complete and houses from 10-20 individuals.

When you access the Build Menu, Sam will declare:
Sam: Houses increase Population
Click to select this house.
When you place the skeletal form of the House,
Sam: Start Building! Click the Construction Site.
When the first Star pops out after you hit the building, Sam will inform you that work can give you all sorts of Rewards, including Energy, Goods and items for Collections. She then will declare:

Sam: You're almost done! Click again to move people into their home.

A moving van will arrive with tiny people who will wave to you and express joy in a thousand different ways. Sam then will tell you:
Sam: You'll be Mayor in no time! Look for Goals on the left.
Okay

With this, the first Goal icon will appear.

New Goal:
Name your City
A Town is Born!
Congratulations, Freyashawk! Pick a great name and grow your town into a thriving City.

The Zynga Gazette then appears in the centre of the screen with:

Zynga Gazette
Freyasville is Born!
Will Freyashawk have what it takes to be Mayor?
Share the News and Coins

As in Farmville, with completion of any Goal, you have an option to post on your Wall. Players who click on your post will receive a variety of rewards, from Coins, to Experience Points to Items.

At this point, Samantha, your 'in-game' Neighbour, will suggest that you 'Add Neighbours'. This is Zynga's attempt to fish for new players. Do as you please, but I would recommend that you play the game a little before you decide to suggest it to any friends who are not familiar with it yet.

Now another Quest appears:

Let's get this town growing!
Increase Population to 50
Reward: 50 Coins
HINT: Use the BUILD Menu to build Houses. Houses increase Population.
Okay.

Note that more than one Goal may appear simultaneously. When this is the case, I will list all the Quests that appear before I give any details about them.

All actions in Cityville are connected. In this respect, it is similar to 'Harvest Moon'. You cannot increase your Population beyond a certain point until you have built Community Buildings to support it. Building Businesses is only the first step in your commercial success. You need to obtain Goods to supply all your businesses regularly. Growing Crops and harvesting them creates Goods, but until you create Storage Buildings, you will have a very limited capacity in terms of the number of Goods you can create or accept.

Some of the new goals will be unlocked when you complete specific Goals. Others are unlocked when you reach a specific Level. Goals dependent on the growth or harvest of specific Crops cannot be unlocked until you unlock the Crops in question. Usually, a specific Crop will be unlocked at a certain level of Experience.

Goals that are unlocked specifically by reaching a certain level include the 'Unlock Cruise Ships' Goal and 'Vive La France' Goals, which become available only when you reach Level 20.

Expansions and building Roads are the key to unlocking new options as well. As in Harvest Moon, if you move forward gradually but steadily in all areas, planting and harvest Crops, building new homes, businesses and community buildings as well as increasing your Storage and supply of Goods in order to be able to keep all businesses running, you will unlock new options regularly.

Note here that the value of any House, Community Centre or shop is enhanced by the decorations that are placed near it. Buying Decorations and doing some landscaping therefore is not a frivolous activity but can increase your revenue.

Planting and harvesting Crops is an integral part of Cityville even though a player must create primarily an urban environment at the start of the game. You cannot harvest Crops, however, unless you have a place to store them or are able to use them instantly. Building Silos and other Storage Buildings, therefore, are integral to your success in business and in completing goals that are related to farming.

Visiting Neighbours is an important aspect of Cityville. Whenever you visit a Neighbour's City, you will obtain the following rewards:

50 Coins
3 Energy
1 XP

You can perform a total of five actions in any Neighbouring City. These include the following:

Collecting income from homes
Sending tour buses to businesses
Reviving Withered Crops
Watering growing Crops
Harvesting Ripe Crops

You will gain Reputation Points when performing these actions.

A new option has appeared in Cityville with respect to Neighbours. It is announced in a Quest entitled:

Goal: Love thy Neighbour!
Samantha: You can now ask neighbours for specific help in your City. Place hearts so your neighbours know what you need!
Okay

Love Thy Neighbours
Reward: 100 XP
Place 5 Hearts in your City
Click on the arrow button to select the heart tool. Level up ypour reputation to get more hearts!

Click on 10 Hearts in your Neighbours' Cities
Visit City Sam to help you progress on this task!

A Player must be at a certain Level to unlock this Goal, however. It may require a specific Reputation Level as opposed to Experience Level.

Primary Goal of Winning Election

As with Harvest Moon, a player can do as he/she pleases, ignoring the Goals that appear on the left side of the screen. In doing so, however, he or she will discover that it may not be possible to achieve the primary significant Goal of becoming Mayor of his/her own City. Performing all Goals allows a Player to move forward to the more advanced Goals, unlocking new Buildings, a City Port, a Seaport, new Decorations and winning recognition as the Mayor. The richest experience, therefore is possible only if a Player is willing to cooperate with the gameplan.

Note that there are no time limits to achievement of the Goals. If one disappears from the list on the left side of the screen, it will be retained in the Goal Notebook which can be accessed at any time.

Building primarily is a matter of obtaining the skeletal form of the Building, then using Energy to complete it. In the cases of many of the Community Projects and some Businesses, there is an added requirement to staff the building once construction is completed or to furnish it using specific materials. Doing either requires the use of Requests.

There are two methods by which Requests can be made and the game determines which of these should be used in any instance. One method is by posting to the Player's own Wall. The other is by sending Requests individually to some or all Neighbours or Friends.

If a Friend who is not a Neighbour wishes to 'help', he/she must allow Cityville access to his/her personal details. Some Facebook users are reluctant to allow this if they are not interested in playing the game. You therefore are best advised to send Requests only to Players who actually play Cityville themselves or are interested in doing so.

Construction Projects and Buildings

There are a number of different methods by which new Buildings can be introduced to your City and different types of Buildings.

The first category of Building is a Residence. Residences must be purchased in the Residence section of the Build Menu. When purchased, they will require a specific amount of energy to build, but once completed will not require any help from Neighbours. Every type of Residence can house a specific number of individuals, thereby increasing City Population. Each will yield a specific amount of Rent as well.

Collecting Rent, whether from a small Cozy Cottage or a large

Franchises:

Franchises are an important aspect of life in Cityville. To be truly successful, you must allow Neighbours to open Franchises in your City by placing Empty Lots for them and request Franchises of your businesses in your Neighbours' Cities.

Franchises are created with existing businesses. At low levels, your Businesses will net less income than the Businesses you can open at higher levels. In order to open a Franchise in a Neighbour's City, you must have sufficient money to build it. You then need to be able to supply it on a daily basis if you wish to reap the rewards.

When you have built four or five Franchises, you will be given the option to create a Headquarters for that business in your City. This is a building that allows you to manage your Franchise. Although you can manage different business franchises from a single Headquarters, each Franchise has its own distinctive HQ and you will be given an option to build a Franchise for each as you expand into other Cities with the business in question.

Some Expansion goals include:
Build Headquarters

Supplies and Neighbours

Cityville is much more dependent upon Neighbours than Farmville, although Farmville is becoming increasingly similar, adding Quests to ordinary Gameplay options.

In Cityville, most Goals require specific Materials or Items. There are a number of ways in which to obtain these:

1. Mystery Gifts sent by Neighbours
2. Requests posted individually to Neighbours
3. Requests posted on YOUR Wall
4. Requests posted by Neighbours on THEIR Walls

Visiting Neighbours' Walls to help with their Requests therefore is an excellent strategy in terms of fulfilling your own requirements where Goals are concerned. Items that are needed for Goals that are more advanced than your own will be stored until needed.

In Cityville, upgrades are very much part of the game and in many cases, the same Items or Materials are needed for Upgrades as were needed to complete the original building project. A player therefore may find the Item/Material that is needed for an initial Goal on the Wall of a Neighbour who is upgrading the same Building. Where Neighbours' Walls in Farmville tend to be a wonderful source of Rewards such as rare Trees and Animals, those Walls in Cityville are vital if a Player wishes to complete Goals as quickly as possible.

Community Buildings

Community Buildings serve a number of different purposes in CityVille. When completed, they are a wonderful source of regular income. They allow Population Increases as well. Some include the option to play Mini-Games. The Police Station is one of the early Community Buildings that offers a Mini-Game.

The Police Station is the site of an ongoing game of 'Cops and Robbers'. The game is not unlocked by the completion of the Police Station but rather by upgrading a level 1 Police Station to Level 2. You then will find criminals skulking through the City randomly. Click on them to capture them and receive random monetary rewards. Your Police Force is fueled by doughnuts and if they run out of their sweet treats, they fall asleep on the job.

Rewards:

Rewards in the form of Posts on Neighbours' Walls take a number of forms in Cityville and as in FarmVille, the number of Players who can benefit from the Post varies according to the nature of the Wall Post.

Rewards provided by clicking on a Neighbour's Post include Coins, XP, City Goods, Building Materials and special Items used to complete Upgrades. The actual Post can consist of a Request for specific Materials or can be congratulatory in nature, inviting Neighbours to share in benefits reaped by the Player's accomplishment.

Where the Post is a Request for specific Materials or Items, there are different Rewards for providing these Materials/Items and the number of Players who can click on the Post varies according to the Reward given for clicking. If the Reward is Coins, only three players can click on the Post. Furthermore, there is a limit as to the number of Coin reward Posts with which a Player can interact in any given day. If, however, the Reward is reciprocal, the Player receives the same Material/Item in return and more than three Players sometimes can click on the Post successfully.

The other methods by which Players can obtain necessary Building or Upgrade Items/Materials is by individual Request. In other words, the Player can send the Request individually to other Cityville Players. A Player cannot send an infinite number of individual Requests to a specific Neighbour, however. This can present difficulties for a Player who needs Materials/Items but has only a few Neighbours.

All in all, the Reward system in Cityville can be rather frustrating and vexing because of all the variations.

Probably the best option is the Mystery Gift, which can prove to be Coins, City Goods or specific Materials/Items for Building and Upgrades. The advantage of the Mystery Gift is that it allows Players to obtain the items they need without being too demanding in terms of sending off endless Requests to their Neighbours. I therefore tend to send Mystery Gifts to my Neighbours.

Land Expansions

Land Expansions in Cityville must be considered Rewards for completing a number of ongoing Goals in terms of building Homes to increase Population, building Community Buildings to allow for population expansion as well as building Businesses and expanding them to give incentives to tourists and residents to visit or reside in your City. As in any real City, there are government documents which must be obtained in order to allow any Expansion. These are Zoning Permits.

Permits can be sent as Free Gifts or can be requested outright by posting such a Request on the Player's own Wall. Moreover, Permits are one of the items that are found quite frequently in Mystery Gifts. Unless you are determined to expand your City at an incredible speed, you may never even be aware of the Building Permit requirement when you purchase your Expansions for 20,000 Coins each.

Land Expansions always have minimum Population Requirements. Remember that everything in CityVille is connected. You may not be able to build a new residence to increase your Population if you have insufficient Community Buildings in your City. By expanding every area of your City's life in a balanced fashion, without focusing exclusively on a single Goal, you will find the game less frustrating!

Goods and Premium Goods

Ordinary Goods in brown Crates can be generated in a number of ways. These are the Goods that must be supplied to businesses to keep them running. They are the supplies every business needs.

When you unlock the Factory and complete it, you will have access to Premium Goods. These are purple crates that are generated when Factory Jobs are completed. They can be supplied to most businesses in lieu of ordinary City Goods.

There is a strange anomaly in CityVille, however, that does not allow Malls to be supplied with Premium Goods. Make certain that you have a sufficient supply of ordinary City Goods on hand when you need to supply your Mall.

There will be a Zynga Gazette Announcement as follows:
Freyashawk nominated for Mayor!

Share the News and Coins
The reason I mention this detail is because attainment of the office of Mayor is one of the first primary goals in Cityville. Until you are elected Mayor, you will be unable to build a proper Seaport.
The method by which the office is ‘won’ is through the completion of the Goals that appear on the left side of the screen. Ignore any of these goals at your own peril. Like Harvest Moon, you can play this game and enjoy it without performing the goals, but you will be unable to move forward significantly as new options are unlocked by the achievement of specific goals.

When you have completed the City Hall goal, you will meet Paul.

Hello, I'm Paul! I'm a simple man. Lumberjack by trade. Lookin' forward to life here and supportin' ya for Mayor.

The Country Home costs only 600 Coins, requires 2 Energy to build and raises Population by 30 to 50 people. You can collect 10 coins per hour as rent.

Here again, you can combine goals. If you did not plant Rita's Garden yet, you can buy Decorations that satisfy her requirements as well as those of Paul, such as Shade Trees.

The Police Station is the site of an ongoing game of 'Cops and Robbers'. The game is not unlocked by the completion of the Police Station but rather by upgrading a level 1 Police Station to Level 2.
